The cycle of civilization is bogus:
history supposedly could be understood as an inevitable cycle, where peoples in harder, poorer places conquer their richer neighbors, become rich and âdecadentâ themselves, lose their fighting capacity and are conquered in their turn â Collections: The Fremen Mirage, Part I: War at the Dawn of Civilization

Travel in ancient Rome:
- The Stanford Geospatial Network Model of the Roman World reconstructs the time cost and financial expense associated with a wide range of different types of travel in antiquity. ⌠The model consists of 632 sites, most of them urban settlements but also including important promontories and mountain passes ⌠The baseline road network encompasses 84,631 kilometers (52,587 miles) of road or desert tracks, complemented by 28,272 kilometers (17,567 miles) of navigable rivers and canals. â ORBIS
- OmnesViae is a route planner for the Roman Empire, based on historical data. Its main source is a (medieval copy of) a Roman map, known as the Tabula Peutingeriana (TP), showing the *cursus publicus*, the road network of the Roman Empire. Since the western most part of the map has been lost, places and routes in that part of the empire are from the *Antonine Itinerary* (Itinerarium Antonini). â OmnesViae
Historians:
But I want to employ the concept of fascism as an ideology with more precision than its normal use (âthing I donât likeâ) and in that context ask if Donald Trump fits the definition of a fascist based on his own statements and if so, what does that mean. And I want to do it in a long-form context where we can get beyond slogans or tweet-length arguments and into some detail. Now the response from some folks is going to be anger that I am even asking this question and demands for me to âstay in my lane.â To which I must remind them that the purpose of history and historians is, as Thucydides put it, is to offer âan exact knowledge of the past as an aid to the understanding of the future, which in the course of human affairs must resemble if it does not reflect itâ (Thuc. 1.22.4). This is my lane. â New Acquisitions: 1933 and the Definition of Fascism
