Science fiction, short story collections by Ted Chiang.

Fantasy: "The Magicians" by Lev Grossman. "Till We Have Faces" by CS Lewis.

Horror: "Father of Lies" by Sarah England (might be a bit, um, British for some tastes); "The Colony" by FG Cottam

Crime: All the "Sam Applewhite" books by Heide Goodie. Again, very British. All the "Charles Paris" books by Simon Brett

Historical fiction: "The Essex Serpent" by Sarah Perry. Anything by CJ Sanson, particularly "Sovereign"

Dystopian: "The Reapers are the Angels" by Alden Bell

Everything else: "Alias Grace" and "The Heart Goes Last" by Margaret Atwood; "Fantasticland" by Mike Bockhoven;

@CarloMonte That's a very thoughtful book. I think I've read something by her before.

“Andromeda” - Theresa Bohman.

Sort of an age-gap tragedy? I think if you like slice of life stories you might like this even if you dont like romances.
