OpenIndiana — a cool FOSS unix-like operating system downstream from OpenSolaris. It’s not Linux or *BSD!

Linux and *BSD too mainstream for you? Check out this awesome unix-like OS I recently discovered. It can work as a server or a workstation and has a rolling release called Hipster. Not a lot of packages but very cool. OpenIndiana comes with a beautiful custom MATE desktop environment.

It’s based on Illumos which is downstream from OpenSolaris, which is downstream from Solaris. In 2010 when Sun Microsystems was acquired by Oracle, they ended in-house development of OpenSolaris. A lot of hackers in the community didn’t like that and decided to create OpenIndiana and Illumos to continue the work towards a FOSS version of Solaris. It can handle SPARC and x86-64 CPU’s.

I wouldn't call it "UNIX-like." I would call it UNIX!

It's UNIX and I have used it many times on different laptops.

I watched a video a while ago back on this and this reminds me to find the iso or whatever soon and give it a spin; I won't for a while, but one day it will strike me and it is all the more likely for your post here, so thank you...
