Homelab x security — I'm thinking about making a homelab. I'm wonder what's the best / most secure practices. I'm not in tech as a field, but I know enough that I should be careful. Fix CasaOS - Failed to load apps, please refresh later — If you run CasaOS on your servers you might have seen that after the latest docker update to version 29.0.2 the apps under CasaOS no longer appear and an error is shown saying: Failed to load apps, please refresh later [gemini link] I've written this post with a temporary fix until CasaOS gets updated

Question: I have a variety of older e-waste machine that I've rescued and held on to. I'm interesting in running some kind of homelab (probably a nextcloud instance, or some kind of shared drive for all the devices in the half_elf_monastery. What should I be looking for in hardware? Should I prioritize the best processor? Or the most capacity for storage expansion? Lowest power consumption? Is form factor a consideration at all (i.e., laptop vs. desktop vs. server-rack? I use Coolify with simple OCI (docker) containers to host my website from a bag of static HTML files. Finding such containers for HTTP is easy; can anyone suggest such a turnkey container for a Gemini server?

I give you... the Lack Ness. All my home machines are named after mythical sea creatures. Here you have Kraken (the Cisco switch) and Jormungandr (A Thinkserver T460 in a Rosewill enclosure). Since Ikea no longer makes these with solid legs, they are bolted all the way through the Lack table legs. A headache, to be sure, but very sturdy. There's the hard part over. Time to 3D print some rack mount enclosures.

The Lackrack begins! I've just finished putting together a lackrack with casters, as well as a top and bottom table surface. Next up is a patch panel, used Cisco WS-C3650, re-cased used Lenovo TS460, UPS, industrial 5v power supplies, and as many spare Raspberry Pis in 3D printed rackmount enclosures as I dare. 10tb cheap drives — folks i remember someone found 10tb cheap hard drives somewhere, maybe on ebay? or maybe you know where to get sech drives? i found some drives used for 5 years in data center, but refubrished and with 5 years warranty. is it possible? and they contain helium instead of air. have you heard of such a technology? thank you.

It all started with a snap! — As of today, I am running just over 70 docker containers (but no snaps) on my Ubuntu host server whirring away in my electronics cabinet. Looking in the electronics trash at my company, I found a nice 4 TB hdd. Unfortunately, the drive was in the trash for a reason, the SMART report indicated some errors. When I ran the `badblocks` command, a dozen of bad blocks were found, all lumped toogether at the end of the drive. I still want to use the drive, if only for data I won't be too sad to loose.
