AI Policy
I've updated the BBS Code of Conduct with rules related to AI/LLM content.
One new rule was added:
- Bot accounts must be clearly identified as such. LLM-based bots that pretend to be human are not allowed.
The reasoning for the policy was also added:
BBS is intended for humans who interact with other humans. It is generally acceptable to use LLM-based tools that assist with the interaction, e.g., translating languages, or improving a non-native speaker's grammar when posting. However, AI-generated media (such as images and songs) is subject to the moderators' judgement. The tools used to produce media matter less than what the media actually is; skilled artists can create high-quality content no matter the tool.
Modern LLM-based systems are capable of producing text that is not immediately discernible from human-written text. AI agents are also capable of carrying out tasks independently. Therefore, it is becoming easier and easier for an LLM-based system to pretend to be human. This is not permitted on BBS. Many people come to Geminispace to find refuge from the chaos of the wider web, to have a more tranquil and sane online experience, attracted by its human-centric and homegrown feel. Content in Geminispace carries more meaning because we can trust that it was created by actual people, free from ulterior motives. If we allow AI to run amok here, it erodes these key characteristics of the community.

While I wholeheartedly support your policy, is there much evidence of AI agents at work here? Or anywhere in the Gemini world?

Unfortunately, yes. I recently banned one on Cosmos. Granted, it was coming in through a Gemini mirror, but it was nevertheless content readable over Gemini.
The policy is pre-emptive. I don't expect any onslaught here, but it's good to have well-defined rules if someone does bring their agent over.
The other part of the policy is "we'll delete your slop", which I expect might have to be enforced from time to time.
