Re: "Does anyone on this BBS use a Chromebook?"

In: s/ChromeOS

I used one regularly, before I started caring about data privacy / etc. Afterwards, I learned you can root some models and install various kinds of linux. After a while I ended up wanting more / better hardware (or rather: hardware that was better supported and less fiddly with the OS I was using), so I switched to something else. I've still got them around... somewhere.

They are made to be wasted every year, also, you get tracked for everything if you still have ChromeOS on it.

See, that's the thing though. Chromebooks *are* still useful on into eternity, they just may be useful for different purposes. Mine that I use every single day is 10 years old and still runs Linux and streams YouTube just fine.

If a Chromebook becomes so old that it's no longer good for video streaming, then it can become part of edge compute on my network. Chromebooks tend to be built on very efficient hardware, but they still have more horsepower than the old Raspberry Pi Zero that I have my webhosting on.

It can monitor some sensors to check the weather. It can just be a display for some data. When its battery dies, then remove it. I never let my computers retire. :)

I still use one when I am on the road. I SSH into my boxes and do nearly everything on cli/tui :)
