Minecraft has been my cosy game since the alpha. I play without mobs/peaceful and with commands/cheats.
I tried creative but that doesn't tickle my brain enough.

I'm not too familiar with all the Minecraft modes... That would mean you can still explore, you can still take fall damage, and can still "beat" the game? 🤔
Stardew Valley covers all the bases of cozy for me, 10 out of 10 times. I'm not sure if it's retro though. Same, but less, for Animal Crossing: while the game is old, I play it on a Switch, which is less than 10 years old, so depending on one's age, it might be fresh outta factory or already ancient. But if we go for real old, that'll be Transport Tycoon Deluxe for me (the OpenTTD one), — this one can get me into a state of flow and make me forget all the hard stuff and get real cozy very quickly.

If I just want to relax by playing some games I'll probably bring out an action puzzle game of some sort, often Wario's Woods or some version of Puzzle League, or one of the Tetris Blast/Bombliss games.
fields of mistria is my go-to, but i got moonstone island recently and it has me feeling all nausicaa

@NovaSquirrel Tetris Blast is on my list of best Game Boy games! It's so fun.
The game that surprised me was Tetris Plus, with the little guy walking around the playfield. I found it weird at first, but once I got into it it was kind of addicting. 😅

@NovaSquirrel Another Wario's Woods fan!? I got HOOKED on that in Animal Crossing on the Gamecube, since it was one of the NES games you could unlock. I would stay up later than I should have playing it. \\ My cozy game of late has been Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar!

I would probably play The Bazaar or some of the visual novels in my backlog, that's always relaxing for me.
By the way @drcouzelis your answer is very funny to me because Zelda II has always been my least favorite game ever released for the NES! I was really into Zelda I and II was a huge letdown for me so I always hated it with a passion, hahaha. No hard feelings though. :)

@RubyMaelstrom Haha absolutely no problem! Zelda II is my favorite Zelda game to play and re-play. I've beaten it countless times. But I would NEVER recommend it to someone to play. 😆
Sometimes the best cozy games are the ones we've played to death and can beat in our sleep but still provide a bit of challenge.
Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, Kirby and the Squeak squad and Catz on the GBA.

Stardew Valley. Retro is an aesthetic and not an age (but Stardew will be 10 years old next month!!) There is a similar game called Fields of Mystria. But it ain't done yet. If I had to compare the two: Stardew is the SNES game and Fields is the Genesis/Mega Drive game. I can't explain it, it's just the vibe I get. Sort of like Final Fantasy III vs Phantasy Star IV.
ah maybe the original Harvest Moon on SNES? 😊 Stardew valley/Story of Seasons (rebrand of harvest moon) both share so much with this original title. Really good for cozy vibes 😀

And I agree, retro is many times an aesthetic! I recently posted somewhere else:
Most people agree the Game Boy Advance is considered retro. It still had tons of great games coming out five years after its release!
Know what else came out that year, in 2006? PlayStation 3.
Retro is more of a "feel" than a timeframe in many ways.
@drcouzelis no, you can't finish the game, you need some enemy parts for that. That why I turn on commands.
My fun is building with some challenge (scaffolding etc).
my first instinct is to say Animal Crossing, but honestly, thats more of an everyday thing for me, considering how i play it with such routine . but on a rainy day, i'll often replay Yume Nikki !! ive been meaning to check out some of its fangames, actually . ive heard good things on those .

NES emulator (Megaman 2 several minutes ago) or some classic DOS legends (BLOOD, DUKE, REDNECK...)
I rarely play video games nowadays, but I enjoy Gran Turismo 2 (either on emulator or real hardware) and OpenRCT2.
I find writing code more relaxing and cozy tbh
