@ps yeah! today is still horrible to live in,the problem is that they are still stuck to only doing horror-movie style lyrics, which in my opinion severely underpowers the vocalist because he has no expressions of his belives on the lyrics. like cannibal corpse

the simple answer is that it wasn't solely shock factor that made satanic imagery popular in metal music, and many of the reasons why it appealed to people in the past are still valid today. it's also worth looking at who the imagery was shocking - pearl clutching religious zealots who wanted to push their religion's morality on others. Those people still exist today, many in positions of power, and thus there are many people who still enjoy that saying "hail satan" annoys them.
I think you're also underestimating how offensive satanism still is in many parts of the world. I have friends, who are otherwise normal, well-adjusted people, who will not go near drawings of pentagrams because they actually believe it will cause demons to come into their lives. I've known people who will not listen to "satanic" metal music explicitly because they think the album art and lyrics will invite demonic forces into their lives. That sort of superstition is far from dead.
anyway my favorite type of metal lyrics are the ones where at a glance it seems like the song is leaning into the gory, shock lyric trope, but then is actually completely banal. Favorite example is Necrophagist's "Stabwound" which, despite the title, classic technical death metal instrumental, and deep growls, is just about how it sucks when your friends metaphorically stab you in the back.

rip, but speaking of Death, Death to All, a Death cover band made up of three former Death members and the guy from Obscura, announced their tour for the 30th anniversary of symbolic and 35th anniversary of spiritual healing recently.

Yeah, some bands use it as a form of protest from these hyper religious crazy people which is true. And speaking about the Death cover band, its pretty cool to see the old Death members still doing it. May God bless them!

I dont get why metal bands today still try to be demonic and shit, when all the bands that were "demonic" back then (like when death metal was being created in the 90's) were all just a marketing stunt. It was for shock value, but today? Man,even moms can handle the lyrics,so why do it?
