This is my first poll post on this BBS.
Especially for those who don't know Japanese. Do you want a subspace where you can post about Japan in English, separate from s/ๆฅๆฌ ?

Note that an automatic translation of a page with mixed languages can trip-up the translation software, especially if these are simpler open source solutions.
๐ stack ยท May 05 at 13:58:
As I tried to express earlier, there is room for both... One is for people who speak Japanese and want to talk to other people in Japanese, and the other is for English speakers interested in Japan and the Japanese culture...

That's right. For example, Lagrange also has a translation function, so if you are interested, you will be able to translate Japanese and understand it to some extent.
I watch Nekoweb and Neocities, so I really often see people who are busy with Japanese culture in English. It might also be ideal to have such a place in Gemini.
๐ StrokedOut ยท May 05 at 14:20:
What I meant was a page, where there are many different posts in different languages, might not be translated, if the "wrong" language dominates.
So users have to either copy-and-paste each post separately, or open these separately to translate.
You can see how Lagange's translation feature has problems, if you want to translate a multi-lingual tinylog in Geminispace. I've tried it, and it fails a lot.
Another point for having separate subspaces is automatic notifications by following a subspace. Then you will get emails with content you cannot understand.

well, i would name it s/visit-Japan or s/japanese-culture or something. ๆฅๆฌ is obvious for japanese speakers.

I'm curious. What does Lagrange use to translate?
๐ StrokedOut ยท May 05 at 15:04:
@The_Jackal I think LibreTranslate, an open source software hosted from home by @skyjake, Lagrange's developer. Better ask him to make sure.
๐ skyjake [...] ยท May 05 at 15:32:
Yep, I have a LibreTranslate instance for Lagrange. Its translations aren't the best, but usually you can get the gist of the post.

I'm interested in a space for learning Japanese and about Japan... I try not to assume that talking *about* a place and culture is necessarily a place where it's okay to talk about *learning* that place, culture, or language.

In courtesy to japanese newcomers and longtime members alike, I think a separate sub-space for discussion about japan + related between a space for discussion -in- japanese should be established. in which one space occupies thoughts and interests to do with japanese culture and the other encourages and nurtures some place for people to practice japanese, converse, and relate on japanese matters amongst members who are native or foreigner alike.

It's morning in Japan. I just got out of bed.
When I looked here, it was full of notifications.
It seems that there are people here who are interested in Japanese culture, and I am happy as a Japanese.

There is a Rokuyo (ๅ ญๆ) in Japan.
Rokuyo has 6 days while the day of the week is 7 days.
("ๅ ญ" (roku) is the "6" and "ๆ" (yo) is the week in Japanese)
According to this, today is a bad day for Butsumetsu (ไปๆป ),
tomorrow is a very good day in Taian (ๅคงๅฎ).
So, I'm going to do the subspace tomorrow.

I am interested in Zen discussions as well, if anyone knows a place here

Hi balloon, thank you so much for your hard work, especially for using the new poll feature to gather everyone's opinions! I really appreciate all that you're doing.
๐ balloon [OP/mod] ยท May 06 at 00:23:
Hi @knshow, you will realize that you were doing the right thing. By the way, are you interested in moderators in subspaces? It seems that multiple moderators can manage subspaces here.

Hi @balloon, I just saw your post about Rokuyo!
Since tomorrow is Taian, Iโll follow your lead and send my official reply then. Iโm considering your offer very positively and would be honored to help you, but I'd like to use today to research a bit more about the moderator role first. Talk to you tomorrow on the lucky day!
๐ Ashnar ยท May 06 at 05:37:
Be nice, considering I'm in .jp but it's not my first language.
๐ Let me just add the "it would" to the front of that previous statement so that it reads:
"it would be nice".

@balloon I saw that s/Japan and s/Japanese have been separated, so I knew I had to reply!
Thank you so much for the moderator invitation. Iโm happy to accept, and I look forward to working with you! This is my first time doing something like this, so Iโm really excited.
...To be honest, I was so happy when you first asked that I had already made up my mind then, but I decided to sleep on it just to be sure. My answer didn't change at all, though! lol
