I remember back in the day when I did a bit of ASCII art, I found this free program (it was old even then and written in Java) that was like a drawing package for ASCII art (I forget what it was called). It was somewhat limited for its drawing tools but great for ASCII-style pixel-art as it had a grid and you could place characters anywhere without altering the lining up of everything else.

Anyway, I would recommend that for a beginner, if only I could remember what it was called...

I provide two conversion tools in gemini space for converting images to Unicode glyphs and a common text to big text.

Lacks the charm of hand drawn ascii art but if you need something quick it might be an option.
