My method is to pave it over and cry later when something's disappeared. Not recommended, one star.

I am very bad... lost a lot files during the years... Used to have separated partitions, then BTRFS plus subvokumes, eventually one only partition with LVM+LUKS+EXT4... Now from what I heard, wise dudes use ZFS + snapshots + backups...

Seems like its a bit loose out there. Makes me feel welcome. Since posting I've been recommended tips on backing up dotfiles via chezmoi, and use of clonezilla for backups. I'll have a look at ZFS and snapshots too. The main thing for me was the time it took decide what needed backing up before I did the install, and the fear I missed something. With a snapshot, or use of clonezilla, sounds like I can just grab everything and make those decisions later, as needed. Thanks for some pointers. Hopefully no more tears for us all.

ZFS works at a block level, when you back-up with it, the copy is safer and faster than with Rsync for instance. Also ZFS is perhaps the only true multiplatform filesystem even though al the different OS use different settings that may create retro-compatibility issues...

I've re-installed my OS Debian this weekend as a bit of a refresh, clearing unwanted junk and to get a bit more familiar with the tools I use, especially around locations of config files and how PATH environment variables work and things. It's been a great learning experience. I was wondering if anyone would like to share their methods, if you do this, so I can consider updating my workflow. I have a big [note] that lists everything I need to do once installed. I found my prior backup a bit all...
