Yeeeah the best part about Metroid is the vibe and, well, Quackshot ain't it.

I mainly grew up using Nintendo handhelds, The Gameboy Color, advance SP, DS, DSI/DSI XL, and then the Switch. If I ever wanted to get a new game system, I would get the Pyra handheld game system, at least I would get something where I can play game ROMS more safely, than using my android to play them.

@bsj38381 The Pyra looks soooo nice, the pics give me the feeling I had back when I used a Nokia N900. ๐Ÿฅฒ

Is there something unsafe about game ROMs on Android?

I had a SNES in early childhood (and a PS1 and NES so we're crossing multiple generations here) and a copy of Sonic 3 & Knuckles for Windows, then later got a Genesis as a teen. I like cute colorful games and I feel like the SNES library has more of them than the Genesis's library does, but I have found some really cool Genesis stuff like Crusader of Centy.

Now that I'm competent enough at programming to make games for old consoles I've been sticking with the SNES primarily because its color capabilities let me use lots of colors, big gradient ramps, subtle shading, etc. and I don't feel like I'm compromising very much while also still having interesting limitations to work with.

@NovaSquirrel haha I JUST got copies of Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles! ๐Ÿ˜„ I know what you mean, even the cartoony games like Batman & Robin can feel so dark and gloomy.

What SNES game of yours should I check out?

I don't have any finished SNES games yet since I scoped pretty ambitiously and then got busy with other projects, but I do have a small-scale shooter game I started last year and intend to finish this year if I can: https://forums.nesdev.org/viewtopic.php?p=304207#p304207

I also have a few NES games: https://novasquirrel.itch.io/

Feels like the Genesis really played into the western 90s energy and trying to look like the "cool" console, on top of the console just not supporting a ton of colors at once. If you try to do shading it can get cramped.

@NovaSquirrel I just found out I ALREADY follow you on Bluesky. ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜† Nice to see you again!

I grew up with both. I remember having the Super Scope 6 with Toejam and Earl. That was pretty fun. I wish I hadn't gotten rid of it. I still have my SNES with 8 or 10 games from when I originally bought it off my dad's coworker. Sonic and Knuckles with the top-load onto the game was pretty neat.

I personally haven't had any technical issues downloading game roms to android on my phone. I will recommend some game rom sites CD romance dot org and ROM hustler too.

I did used to have a bed habit of deleting game roms to give my phone more space, without thinking. But that's it really.

64 colors is plenty! Unconnected, I grew up in the EGA era of shareware.

Also the Menacer had Toejam and Earl.

@darkghost good catch, I didn't have the super scope, it was the menacer.

Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis? โ€” Which did you grow up with, SNES or Genesis / Mega Drive? Which do you play more now? Is there a game on one that you wish was available on the other? ๐Ÿค“
