I was going to make a post about Magic the Gathering drama but then I realized the amount of explaining I’d have to do to make it accessible to those in here that have never played MTG before — let alone the Commander format — would be way too much… so I think I’ve got a new blog post idea lmao

Blog post? Try a book series!

I really tried to get into MTG some years ago. Then my brain wasn't braining and the whole thing got so overwhelming. I just stopped.

Is that the game where you buy the best deck your money can buy and may the richest player win?

Love MTG. Mostly play my old commander decks. Interested in the blog post.

I hardly ever play Magic: the Gathering (and I have no cards) but I have a Magic: the Puzzling book and have seen some other puzzles and made some by myself too, and I do try to keep track of the rule changes in Magic: the Gathering.

@lilemon That’s very fair. That’s what happened to me with YuGiOh: it just became too expensive and the meta was too confusing to me. MTG EDH has been a much better experience for me because of the casual environment I play in (tho lucky to have a casual playgroup where I live lol)

@stack I’d say YuGiOh has a much bigger problem with that than MTG, at least in casual commander. The good thing about MTG’s many formats, including limited formats where everyone has to construct their decks on the fly, is that there are many ways to play even if you don’t have a lot of money. YuGiOh only having one official format (okay, two now) means it costs a lot more money to play the game outside of your kitchen table and actually have a good time

Never played MTG, well actually I've played two games and it was underwhelming. I've looked at other games prior to those two games, but every tutorial has this bit: "zyz is like abc in MTG so....". I just switch off as there is no point of reference. Unfortunately it's not as ubiquitous as some may imagine. Which, is your point I suppose.

@stack - That might be true at like, world-tournament tier events. In my local playgroup, I regularly use my $25 deck to beat guys who have $600 decks. Throwing more money into cards is one of those "I'm too lazy to make this code efficient" moments, but in cardboard rather than digital form.

@kebokyo - I'd read both of those posts. I've played for a while. But also, I don't follow the drama, so I'd learn something too.

@Ashnar yeah, TGC players don’t seem to be good at nurturing newer players into their games — that’s definitely going to be a part of the blog post lmao. Ironically this video by an anime YouTuber seems to be the best one so far of crash coursing you into MTG, albeit at a very fast pace as is his style

I remember my kids were spending their allowance on assorted decks hoping for some good cards but lost games to rich kids
