About
This is the Gemini capsule component of my experimentation with self-hosting an internet-connected server! It should be considered in something like an 'alpha' state, i.e. please don't rely on it working. That being said, as part of my learning about sysadminship, I do intend to try to keep uptime as high as possible!
Most content on folk.red will not be mirrored between formats. Check out folk.red on HTTP to see if there's anything different there!
Current services
- Web server (lighttpd), HTTP and HTTPS
- Gemini server (stargazer)
Setup
This Gemini capsule (along with most other folk.red services) is served by a Rasperry Pi 1B that I am self-hosting from home. I wanted to learn about networking this year, but electricity (in Scotland in 2026) is expensive! I happened to have access to an original Raspberry Pi 1B (confusingly this is an earlier model than the 1A), so I put Alpine Linux on it (for more info, see the link below) and plugged it into my router! I paid for the use of the domain folk.red for a year, set up the domain to redirect to my static IP (which I requested from my ISP), set up my router to port-forward to the Pi, and installed a couple of servers!
