Work
I still work in a cube-farm. I've been doing pretty much the same job for the last 21 or so years, and I'm getting tired of it. I have a few more years to go before I can consider moving on due to kids, and bills, and such, but I think I'm going to switch careers eventually. I'm in management now, and I miss doing the actual work (yes, a common complaint but now it's me that's living it), and so, I think I'm going to do something akin to what Lester Burnham did in American Beauty and get "...a job with the least amount of responsibility possible." Okay, not that extreme, but it made for a good quote. I may try my hand at being an electrician; something blue-collar working with my hands. We'll see how it actually pans out.
Family
I have two small kids and they keep my spouse and I fairly busy. They're awesome and exhausting all at once. Aside from work it's the hardest thing I've had to do in my life, but it's also amazing to watch babies turn into people.
Current Interests
- Gemini - (duh). I've been on Gemini for around 4 years now, and go through phases of use. Interestingly I drop most computer-type hobbies in the summer and resume in the cooler months when I'm inside more. So if I haven't posted in a while. That may be why.
- Pickleball - This sport has taken the top spot for me for exercise. I've been going several times a week after work because it's so much more fun. I like it better than racquetball because I can play so much more - with racquetball, I can play 1, maybe 2 times a week because of all the twisting, turning, and high-power swings. It takes a toll on your body after a couple of hours. Pickleball, on the otherhand, has less impact, but darn near the same level of cardio intensity, and I can play for hours across multiple days; it's great. Pickleball has this negative cloud over it because it's seen as a retiree sport, and while it is accessible to all, Pickleball can get so much more intense. I've also been outplayed many times by people 15-20 years my senior, arguable in better shape than I, and I'm not that out of shape. It's a great sport for all.
- Racquetball - I found this sport 8-10 years ago and really love it. But, there's really not a big demand for it these days so finding folks to play against is the challenge. Even so, playing by yourself in an empty racquetball court can get your heart pumping just the same. Pickleball has mostly replaced this for me, but I may still play now and again.
- Reading - I read at least a few pages of fiction every night before bed. It's mostly sci-fi and fantasy because reading non-fiction, to me, right before bed feels like more work. You can see my bookshelf from my main page. I was reading the Mistborn trilogy for a while but stalled out in book 2. I'm currently reading book 2 of Dungeon Crawler Carl, which is a fun, light and easy read before bed, with a bit of humor.
- Bicycling - I used to ride a lot but, again, I haven't carved out the time with the tight schedule with the kids. I bought a road bike in 2004('03?) that I've been maintaining over the years, and hope to ride soon.
