Dear Dairy:
Recently, I’ve gotten to know someone with whom I strongly disagree on several issues I consider important to both community and personal well-being.
Our discussions have been intense at times, and I’m sure we’ve each walked away feeling frustrated and, perhaps, not fully heard. Even so, I continue to extend my full trust to him.
What I’ve also taken from these exchanges is a clear example of someone who stands firmly behind his convictions. In my view, that level of conviction gives his perspective as much legitimacy as my own.
Why is all this important? IMO the example above is the foundation for moving beyond even centuries old human conflicts. The necessary elements are Respect and Trust. The change must happen between two old men who disagree but believe in the ligitimacy of the other's views and opinions. Trust is built on Trust, first we all trust one another, just a little, and then we allow it to grow.
We already know how to 'make' War. It is now time to learn to Make Peace. Two ingredients: Respect and Trust. We all need to practice more.
