2024 Week 44/45/46: Status and Photos

2024-11-18

---

The weather in the American Midwest has remained unusually warm the last few weeks. I don't hate that, because it means I can enjoy more days outside without having to bundle up, but it makes me feel like we're still in early autumn. When it's 6 AM and my thermometer reads 15 C, I expect the calendar to say it's still mid-September, not mid-November.

My wife contrated COVID-19 for the second time recently. I was exposed to her at home, but I took COVID-19 tests myself six and eight days after her most likely time of exposure, and I received negative results both times. That gave me the confidence to go to a short social gathering over the weekend--though, for the sake of safety, I still wore a face mask.

I love the interfaces of both my F(x)tec Pro1 X and my ClockworkPi DevTerm, but I use them very little compared to my other devices. It's difficult for me to find the motivation to try switching to them for any significant period of time. This week it occurred to me why: I primarily use CLIs on both (and exclusively on the DevTerm), and it's hard for me to get information like news, weather and stocks through that format. Local news in particular is almost impossible to get on alternate protocols like Gopher or Gemini.

A local boba tea shop sells merchandise of various kinds. Some of it is quite cute, but other items make no sense to me. The most perplexing was this set of Charmander and Pikachu figures, in which Pikachu donned a shirt with a crying clown on it.

There aren't many coffee shops around here that are open late into the evening. We found one this week that had quite a warm and inviting atmosphere. My favorite touch was this inspirational quote on the wall, cheesy as it might be.

I played Animal Crossing for Gamecube as a kid, giving my player character the name Joshua. Many versions of Animal Crossing have come out since then, and I haven't booted up the original in many years. One of my villages was there to remind me just how many years it's been. According to his count, the last time I spoke to him was March of 2013!
