Slow Servers: Hosts / Loki

A picture of Loki.

I felt like I ran into one issue after the other getting this server assembled. There was a bit of trial and error. In the end, though, it's possible the problems I faced will have good results in the end. But in the spirit of the difficulty, I have named this host Loki.

This one was going to have a 1TB RE4 drive in it, but the power usage was much too high. I happened to have a spare SSD around, so decided to use it instead.

Power usage is a bit higher than the spare. I am not quite sure why and wonder if part of it is that this is an IPMI motherboard. Could also be related to the fans? Anyway, though, IPMI is disabled on it through a jumper, so maybe that isn't it.

I do think the bigger power supply, despite the same 80+ sticker might not help, either.

Hardware

Supermicro short depth 1U chassis (CSE-512), 350W 80+ Gold powersupply, and motherboard.

Power usage

41W idle, to about 53W max (when using hw.setperf=1)

42W idle, to about 68W max (when using hw.setperf=100)

Ballpark figures, from a cheap meter.
