Let's make the smolnet more social
Okay this is just a small call for people to add mailto links to their capsules. As Ploum has written, we have the tools for a social smolnet outside of hosted messageboards, cosmos and geminimention.
I do not want to deminish those tools. Messageboards are cool and important hubs for transmissions, as are the aggregators. geminimention is a cool idea that I might even implement on my own capsule if I had already setup some scripting backend for other reasons. But at the base of it all, some might not want to make an account on a messageboard or setup the backend required for a mention link. Vise versa, you might wanna reply to a transmission someone made on their own capsule without any "quick" reply mechanism in place.
But I bet my ass every single one of us has an email address. And when put into a mailto link, some browsers like offpunk let you just type "reply" and there's an email window opening to send a reply to that address. That can be a simple "hey, I really like your transmission" or a "Hey, I wrote a transmission in reply to yours, here's the link".
So go on, do it. Now. Let's use that one federated message transfer protocol we have in place for decades to leverage the one layer of communication usable by everyone.
Note
I know, people don't put mailto links on websites anymore and I absolutely understand why. On my own website, my address is obfuscated as well. Fuck crawlers and spambots. But are we really afraid of that here? Idk, geminispace is so small and obscure, I think there is plenty of time until we have to worry about that. And who knows, maybe we have different things in place until then. Maybe geminimention will be a feature all servers will implement one day and all browsers will just use some standardized url for it so there's no need to put the link onto every transmission... Until then, I doubt any tech company has an interest in a network that is too useless to be exploitable
