In case you missed it, @mozz has addressed the recent server issues (on the game Message Board):

I have implemented a few changes in response to the slowness:
There is now a blanket rule against using bots on astrobotany. This is nothing personal against bot operators. I just don't have the time to properly watch the logs and optimize the server, track down misbehaving bots, etc. I went through and blocked around 8 IP addresses that looked like bots. If you're blocked and want access just send me an email (so I know you read this) and I'll unblock you.
You can still use a daily cronjob to water your own plant or pull statistics or whatever. But no more scanning all flowering plants or min-maxing harvesting cycles.
The other change that I made was resetting the petal count in the koi pond to zero. The DB table for petal events was growing out of hand (10 million rows) and is poorly optimized. I also purged dead plants from the database (another 8 million unused rows), and together these changes brought the DB size down from 3 GB to 15 MB.
I'm hoping that this along with the no bot policy (which is running on the honor system) will keep the server in better shape.
