ESP32-CAM poor quality

I managed to compile some ESP-IDF examples for ESP32-CAM, and the image quality is atrocious.

I was hoping to make a simple 'security camera', but the image is so low resolution and low quality that I doubt any faces would be recognizable.

The example web server allows a lot of tweaks for the camera, but increasing the resolution and JPEG quality does not seem to improve the image - it seems to be 1990 quality image, you can actually count the pixels!

I am using the stock camera that came with this $5.00 module, so I suppose I should not complain too much, but it still sucks.

Has anyone here had better luck with other cameras? I was considering trying the cheap wide-angle camera but if the quality is similar, it will be even worse.

I think HD quality is asking a lot of the ESP32. The ESP-P4 can do something like 2MP but doesn't have the WiFi built in, meaning you'd have to bridge it to one that does. I'd had the idea of noodling with pi zero Ws for this purpose. But my project bench is already too full of unfinished junk.

Wondering, any hints for better cameras here? https://www.arducam.com/esp32-machine-vision-learning-guide/

But I second the Piโ€™s โ€” there are some insanely good cameras. There are even 64MP modules for not stellar prices.
