Gemini Text Format in your gemlog — @love, again welcome. I saw your post via Antenna, and wanted to let you know about a small problem. I had a hard time reading it on my phone because you broke lines with a hard return. The Gemini way is: put two returns only at the end of each paragraph. I don't know what editor you use, but set it to word wrap. That allows the readers to easily read your posts no matter what their device is. I am looking forward to reading your posts. P.S. This message will…

Folding Kayaks - Free Market Wins In an earlier post, I showed much enthusiasm for the origami-folded kayaks, made from a single sheet of coroplast. I complained that the only company selling them was charging $1000-$2000 for a $40 sheet of coroplast with a few folds and straps. I labeled that 'Another Failure of Capitalism'. [gemini link] Well, free market is back, and EBAY and Amazon are full of folding kayaks from $120 up. That's more like it. However, since that last post almost a year ago,…

45.157.179.215 -- who is running this search engine? I don't normally log, but I was debugging my Fornax-based gemlog and turned it on to see that someone's been fetching from most ridiculous URLs here. To be fair, by accident, my gemlog will return the entire gemlog index for any URL instead of an error message. And all relative links will work from there I first noticed this crawler a few months ago asking for strange urls like "[gemini link] -- which actually work. I thought it was kind…

Developing a Strange Psychosis — For a while I've been playing a visualization game "Rotate a Cow". Basically you picture a cow and spin it around as if it was on a CAD screen. Over the last year I've been trying a different experiment, and it is backfiring. In this one you place yourself into another person's head, and look at the world from their perspective. It is purely visual -- you are just trying to see what they would see. You can focus on a passerby in the street and "invade" their…

Android file manager Anyone know of a reasonable file manager? Especially for a larger screen device? Android apps make me feel like my hands are tied behind my back and I am using my tongue on a jigsaw puzzle Two panes would be a blessing

Such Ugly Cars — I can't imagine buying a new car. Aside from the stupidity of dozens of computers, cameras that spy on you with a hidden internet connection, they look like total s**t. I was walking the dog today, and every car parked in the street looks like an ugly sneaker. Drives like a car, looks like a sneaker.

rbtms - human or not? I just got 17 thanks/reactions from this user, entered within 1 minute. Is this a human with some kind of a tool/script or a bot?

Air Canada Takes Action — Je me souviens. In the aftermath of the LaGuardia Airport collision, what does Air Canada do to make sure it doesn't happen again? You might imagine -- improving protocols and coordination between the entities running different parts of airports, communication with ground control, or maybe applying political pressure to better fund airport staff... Nope. They ousted the CEO for saying the condolences in English. That will fix the problem.

AI Slop Everywhere — Everything I watch and hear feels flattened, processed, and eerily uniform—like it was drafted by the same invisible system optimizing for clarity, engagement, and neutrality. The voices are polished, predictable, and frictionless, delivering tidy arcs and prepackaged insights with just enough variation to seem human, but never enough to surprise, inspire or awe. There’s always that signature rhythm—the em dash pivot, the triad of descriptors, the carefully hedged claim—...

The Soul of an Old Machine — Tracy Kidder has died. "The Soul of a New Machine" was perhaps the biggest influence on my life. I remember reading it and saying to myself: this is what I want to do. Stay up for days and design computer systems. And I did.

A YouTube ad hack — On my Roku YouTube app, I lifehacked a way to skip the initial ads (and sometimes mid-program ads). If the program does not start and an ad is shown, I immediately hit the back button and select the program again. If the ad (or very often a blank screen) is shown, I immediately hit the back button and select the program again. It always works the third time (and often, second or first). This is completely muscle memory, and I can start any program without ads in a couple of...

Xfinity/Cockmast Bad! — It took me 45 minutes to pay my bill today. I tried 3 different computers with various browsers, and finally did it on my phone with Chrome. It takes minutes for pages to load at their pay system, and you have to disable uBlock and Privacy Badger and all that, even though the site loads tens of web bugs and tracking crap. So it took more than 10 minutes each time, going through 2FA texts and delays just to find out that nope, this won't work. I have to do this every...

Blue Owl, Black Stone, Black Rock — My advice to private credit fund managers: stop using the <color><object> naming strategy for your funds, especially minerals as <object> Greek/Roman gods also, as evidenced by Apollo and Ares, at least.

A poem with all O words (Russian) — @SavaRocks, although it's in Russian, here is a poem in which every word starts with an O. It kind of makes sense and I personally added the ending which is more appropriate

The Evil of Action — I was reminded by none.rip to think about stuff, and am still working it out. At some point I am afraid I will have written a manifesto, but here I am just spitballing. I am a crappy anarchist. I don't appreciate governments for the mass-scale murder and suffering (and to a lesser but tangible degree, corruption and lies) they cause and participate in. But I also don't feel a strong need to fight the State, as another and possibly worse State will take its place. As bad...
