Mile End Kicks — has gotten a theatrical release around Canada. my partner saw it at a film festival last year and thought i would like it, i did. it is a small story about a young woman moving from toronto to montreal and making bad decisions. the focus is on fitting into the music scene as a young woman, both in the motivations of the main character as well as through the book she is struggling to write about Alanis Morisette. i can relate to the experience of being able to understand…

Project Hail Mary — I went to see this film at the cinema tonight - somewhat reluctantly, I might add, because I thought the book was terrible. Turns out a bad book can be made into a good film. Worth a watch if you find yourself in the mood for accessible science fiction.

Anybody enjoy any good b-movies? I've personally been enjoying them more than most Hollywood budget films these days. Most mainstream movies seem to formulaic to me nowadays. I also like some of the bizarre hilarity of b-movies and how many of them don't take themselves very seriously. Any thoughts?

Anyone here seen Iron Lung yet? I watched it in theatres last night and have a LOT of thoughts. I personally found the movie to be very good, but I imagine if you interperet the second half and ending of the movie differently from me it could probably seem a lot lamer. I wrote up a really log blog about it on the web. [https link] (SPOILER WARNING IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET!)

怪物 (2023) — finally got around to watching kore-eda's film 怪物 (monster) from 2023 - highly recommended! it's obvious what it's going for structure-wise from quite early on, but the details of the narrative, the characters and the tone just keep on hitting every beat, every time, every step until the end, like a hammer. masterfully crafted and acted, and beautifully shot by ryuuto kondou who also collaborated with kore-eda on the makanai and shoplifters.

here to recommend probably one of my favorite movies of all time — “Annyoung, sayonara”. The acting is alright, the story is simplistic and ends weirdly, but there’s just something so beautiful about it, I can’t stop thinking of its many components, it’s scenes, it’s music.. it all comes together into what should’ve stayed as a film student’s work, but became one of my favorite things to watch, ever. [https link] Please give it a watch if you can, it deserves so much more praise than what...

Poor Things — It's as if Mary Shelley, Luis Buñuel and Simone de Beauvoir had made a threesome and conceived the film.

Stalker — It is based on one of my favorite books, but I never got to see it until now... It's a trainwreck. I should've expected as much, after Solaris, perhaps my favorite sci-fi novel. All that brooding and blabbery. And really stupid acting. It was kind of like a very long youtube "idiots at work" video, mixed with some strange philosophical ramblings. I guess I am disappointed, but I guess I kind of like idiots at work videos. I have to reread "Roadside Picknick", but I think the...

If you like "true to life" comedies in the same vein as Napoleon Dynamite (but not the same exact kind of humor) The Castle (1997) is a good watch.

What movies had an unusually great cast? I’m watching a documentary on the making of Galaxy Quest called Never Surrender. The cast each brought something unique to the movie, but there was something really rare about them as a collective too. A rough quote; “Tim Allen and Alan Rickman in the same movie shouldn’t work”, is a small example. Despite the visual effects, they could take this movie to the stage with that cast and have no props and still channel the qualities that make it so...

Do you know those people that screm at the screen while watching a movie? What if those character actually listened? Something like that might be possible with AI
