What you see online isn't necessarily what you would find on air. Meshtastic has to be deliberately configured to talk to the internet and nodes participating in the mesh have to specifically permit their traffic to appear online. The defaults for Meshtastic are several mile radius ambiguous location, internet access not configured (not all nodes have the hardware anyway), and not forwarding any of your traffic to the internet.
I also find the map below to have more nodes on it, but it is still less than what you see on air.
