Schäfflertanz in Munich in 2026

Schäfflertanz is a big deal in Bavaria and in Munich and it's going to be taking place in various neighborhoods until about mid-February. It's kind of a big deal, previous time it was in 2022 to celebrate the end of covid, and before that, following its regular rhythm, in 2019. The event takes place every 7 years.

It’s not particularly spectacular, but still very nice to see, to get a feel of the old tradition. In 1517, when it first took place after a plague epidemic, it probably wowed the public and pinpointed a significant point in time; now, it remains important perhaps due to the people’s love for history of their place. If anything, it’s actually a calming, simple group dance, just complex enough to keep the audience entertained, but without much show.

Schäffler are coopers, barrel makers, who had courage to walk onto the streets and dance, inviting everyone to celebrate the end of the epidemic. So it was nice to also see them after the covid lockdown. I honestly don’t know where the arches came from though, but they look cool and make for unique choreography.

This and more fun in Munich in 2026, you don’t need to come for Oktoberfest only, we have cool stuff going all year round. :D
