Windy and snowy in Munich, and it's not even April — So it's windy, it snowed in the morning, and it's fairly cold for the end of March now, although this type of weather is nothing new, except historically it had been reserved for April. So now, it seems, we'll be getting more of that due to heavy winds in the Atlantic, some Arctic cold coming our way sometimes (I love it; balcony plants, not so much), and occasional northward winds bringing some Sahara sand over here The only thing that makes...

St. Patrick's Day in Munich — On Sunday, there was the usual St. Patrick's day parade, walking from Giselastraße (more or less) towards Odeonsplatz. Familiar folks, from the people walking in the parade to the news camera guy. It was lively, the weather wasn't complete shite, so that helped, too. Music and dance on stage, Guinness in unlimited quantities, you know, the regular It's actually quite interesting how prominent, compared to other cities in Germany and several capitals I know people...

So, Munich's Eisbach river is currently less suitable for surfing than for cooling AI servers. Telekom's new underground data center, initially equipped with around 10,000 AI accelerators from Nvidia, is now located under the weir in Tucherpark. At a depth of up to 30 meters, it is not a completely new building but a converted one, originally serving for a bank decades ago.... And the Eisbach river continues to flow over it. See c't 20.02.26

It is snowing in Munich (been a minute) — Beautiful snowfall today in Munich. Also, as usual with such (fairly mild, in fact) weather events, some public transport lines imploded. Buses were delayed by good half an hour. S-Bahn got weird. Not December 2023 level of collapse, but for what it's been (about 5 hours of snow, non-stop), the amount of struggle is about right.

MVG workers strike on Wednesday, February 11, 2026 — And once again MVG strike this week on Wednesday. No transport for the whole day. See post about the previous strike that took place on Monday, February 2:

MVG workers go on strike, U3, U6, and some tram lines expected to be temporarily disrupted — So the workers union is going on strike again, which will make some of the subway lines impossible to rely on. I have mixed feelings about this, but I think it's good. I would have loved if the general population had a way to put a bit of an extra pressure on the companies that find it normal to bump the price by nearly 10% once or twice a year, yet struggle to find common ground with the workers it...

Schäfflertanz in Munich in 2026 — Schäfflertanz is a big deal in Bavaria and in Munich and it's going to be taking place in various neighborhoods until about mid-February. It's kind of a big deal, previous time it was in 2022 to celebrate the end of covid, and before that, following its regular rhythm, in 2019. The event takes place every 7 years. It’s not particularly spectacular, but still very nice to see, to get a feel of the old tradition. In 1517, when it first took place after a plague...

It's snowing in Munich again! — Snowing again. It's been quite warm, then started snowing, so the snow is sticky and, to be frank, a bit too watery to be used to build any sort of thing, really. But it's still nice, it's quite bright outside, because what little artificial light there is on the street, is amplified by the very reflective snow that has coated the sidewalks and curbs. Very nice.

Nymphenburger-Kanal and Olympiasee froze over — So both the Nymphenburger-Kanal and the Olympiasee have frozen over. Olympiasee is larger, so there's literally a patrol car circling around. Nymphenburger Kanal is narrower and perhaps shallower in some places, and there were a ton of people, really many people, doing all sorts of awesome stuff: clearing the ice, playing hockey, just skating, having a picnic. It was so lovely to see! It's cold, but people got out to socialize, make a bit of...
