Obviously 20th century anime is best anime (and I see you already have some listed), so check out:

• Neon Genesis: Evangelion (obvs)
• Ghost in the Shell (obvs)
• Akira (obvs)
• Patlabor (especially the 1st & 2nd movies)
• Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise

They do still make good stuff these days, though, amongst all the total bizarre trope-packed stuff:

• Super Cub (loved this, will phlog/gemlog about it some time)
• The Aquatope on White Sand
• A Place Further than the Universe
• Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai
• Girl's Last Tour
• Shirokuma Cafe (criminally underappreciated, oughta be famous)
• Stein's Gate

Thought of a few I overlooked in my earlier post.

For older stuff, try the Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō OVAs. The manga is better, or rather, more complete. It is being officially published in English as of earlier this year, by Seven Seas Entetrainment. Rejoice!

Another more recent series I quite enjoyed was ReLIFE. It has a slightly "out there" plot for my tastes (though it's absolutely tame by modern day standards), but its actually very well done.

If you're interested in yuru camp may I suggest some of my favourite slice of life anime: hidamari sketch, tamayura, gochiusa and sketchbook full colors. Warning these may not be too deep in the "show about nothing" level for beginners.
