fair enough, i havent either . when i was looking originally for a capsule host my goal was something quick and simplistic--it was late at night and i wasnt wrapping my head around anything new . yestercities was my first option (once i messed around with webdav, after the titan editor refused to work ?) with srht as a far second . wish i had anything easier to offer, but its the second simplest i could find so far ! i hope that somebody else can point you in a more straightforward direction €:

doesnt look like i can update my capsule but i can visit it again!

oh no, they've become sentient!! how will this impact the local trout population??

I went with a $4/mo VPS from dinu.com, with free no-hassle ddns. You do have to be able to install one of Gemini servers.

I gave up on tildes after moving SpellBinding a few times. $4 a month is well worth not having ti do that.

host it hourself with an old computer/laptop/raspberry pi ... that's how I do it

I've been with ctrl-c.club for several years, and never had a reason to complain. Of course, if loads of people started using it, I guess it would fall over.

Low-cost commercial VPS would be my next choice. It's pretty affordable with the kinds of resources you'd need to host a Gemini server.

While I'm drawn to the idea of self-hosting at home, I'm not sure Gemini servers are battle-hardened enough to risk exposing to the public Internet in my house. I'd be happy to be wrong about that.

I always think about self-hosting from home. But opening a machine to outside, poor service, and traveling a lot stop me. Also. can't remember router password.

+1 for ctrl-c.club. No CGI though, I think

As it happens, reading this discussion has prompted me to look at VPS again. I hadn't realized how cheap these things were. £1 a month? Wow. So I'm moving.

The host I was using (yesterweb cities) for my gemlog & such seems to have vanished... Luckily, I have a backup of my files in case such a thing happened, though I'm not sure what to do now. I'm about to email their contact that I found on the https site, but I'm still going to have to find somewhere else to host if I can't really trust that one... any recommendations? (Preferrably less technical, as per my limited knowledge in ssh and such... [and also tilde communities scare me])
