I have a slightly different take. Trump knew the House was going to vote to release the files (despite his best efforts). Once passed, the resolution has to be taken up and voted on by the Senate. After that, Trump has to sign the bill. A lot can happen along the way. He effectively bought himself time to continue whatever election subversion they're planning for 2026 (gerrymandering, voter purges, restricting mail-in, martial law, etc).

My understanding is that Trump could just sign an order to release the files and bypass Congress altogether. That's not going to happen since he's obviously implicated.

The truth may be more even more absurd. There's Bloomberg reporting that the FBI has simply redacted Trump's name from the documents.

Make no mistake, we will never see what is in the Epstein files — Congress is set to vote on and pass a bill requiring the release of these files after months of stalling by the Speaker. President Trump has had an uncharacteristic reversal and is pushing Congress to release the Epstein files. Why? It has everything to do with the probes launched against Democrats (and only Democrats) in the files. The Justice Dept has already looked at what they have and decided (rightly or wrongly) not to...
