@jsrees5 Pokémon Red played on an original Game Boy is still my favorite game in the series! It still amazes me how much they got right in the very first game. 😌

@z1r4 For me, being an middle aged man, retrogames ends with Sega Saturn... anything past it becames an incremental progress but also starts to be "more of the same"

These days my cutoff is "whatever is on RetroAchievements," but they go all the way up to PS2 and next month they're adding Wii support, so that may be a bit generous for some people.

Given that, recently I've been working on the first Drakengard game, because I've been a fan of NieR for many years and know the connections quite between Drakengard and NieR very well, but I've never given it a fair shake. I love the way the characters and story are presented. The gameplay is a little clunky, but really not anything too different from other musou games of that era (just a bit more boring and tedious).

🦝 z1r4 · Feb 04 at 19:05:

@KarstenBeoulve I can relate to that sentiment.

Personally if I gave it an arbitrary cut-off I'd make it 1999. Seems like there was a lot of experimenting going on in the early game industry and into the mid-2000s and on it became [more] formulaic.

🐝 drcouzelis · Feb 04 at 19:11:

1999

That would mean most Game Boy Color games and the entirety of the Game Boy Advance would be kicked out of the retro club. πŸ₯Ί

πŸ‘» darkghost Β· Feb 04 at 19:24:

CD media or cartridge less than 100 MB. GC disks are like mini DVDs and are thus excluded. Same for PS2. Gameboy Advance got as big as 64 MB and is thus included.

🦝 z1r4 · Feb 04 at 19:26:

@drcouzelis you're right, I neglected most handhelds in my thinking; I like @darkghost's cut-off much more than my own suggestion.

πŸš€ KarstenBeoulve [OP] Β· Feb 04 at 19:52:

Also if you take most PS2 games, they are very similar to what we play today, like for example FFX. Everything before had you using quite a bit of immagination while playing. Yeah i think that using your immagination instead of playing like a film make a line too

πŸš€ KarstenBeoulve [OP] Β· Feb 04 at 19:53:

are you sure? I think all of GBC are in

πŸš€ KarstenBeoulve [OP] Β· Feb 04 at 19:54:

CD-Roms are 650/700mb...

🐝 drcouzelis · Feb 05 at 01:50:

@norayr lol "Batty" is a great name for an Arkanoid clone. πŸ˜„

πŸ™ norayr Β· Feb 05 at 08:20:

why? (:

bat is an animal, i never understood why the name.

🐝 drcouzelis · Feb 05 at 11:59:

bat is an animal

"Bat" is also the word for a stick used to hit something, like "baseball bat".

Adding "y" to the end makes a word sound cute.

"Batty" also means to go crazy.

So, it's a cute name of a game where you go crazy trying to hit a ball with a stick! πŸ˜†

thank you. (:

This weekend I plan to play Tecmo Bowl for Game Boy. It's more fun than watching the big Super Bowl American football game. πŸ˜‰

I’m kind of bouncing around to various retro games right now and need to pick a lane. Started going the the Soul Calibur series last year, did Soul Blade on PS1 (MisterFPGA), Soul Calibur (Dreamcast), Soul Calibur II (Wii), Soul Calibur III (PS2) and then skipped to VI and played mostly on Steam Deck. I need to return to it but haven’t gotten a working PS3 setup going yet and the PSP version was weirdly hard.

I am playing way too much Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries. It’s not a retro game but has a lot of retro game wonk and makes me happy.

I'm playing Earthworm Jim for the Sega Genesis!

I loved and played the 8-bit port for the original Game Boy a TON back in the 90s, and I've always wanted to play the original. It's a lot of fun, but I keep dying on the stages that weren't in the GB port because I don't have those memorized! πŸ˜†

apparently i already commented. anyway.
