If anybody's interest in either LLMs or SETI, or both, and has five minutes to spare, I'd welcome your views on this: [gemini link]

How's this for a malgorithm?... My daughter recently served on the jury, in the trial of a man accused of child rape. He was convicted, with the jury unanimous. A couple of weeks later, while looking at Facebook, my daughter got a "people you might know..." recommendation for -- you guessed it -- the rapist. And most of his family, for some reason. I've always been disturbed by how well Facebook and the others can find connections between people, even when given no definite personal data....

Now with added Spartan... I'm not sure how much interest there is in the Spartan protocol these days, but my pointless ramblings are now available on Spartan. It's the same old shit, just different protocol. [spartan link] My capsule on Spartan Not just self-promotion: I'm using a server I wrote myself, and I'd be interested to know whether it works for other folks. I've tested with Lagrange and Alherna. Better, perhaps: I'd be interested to know how easy it is to break, or crash the server....

Are we making a "dark web"? According to the media, the "dark web" is some place where all the terrorists and paedophiles hang out. I don't see any sign of that here. But, less sensationally, the dark web is that set of servers that aren't visible on regular web searches, and need specialist encryption techniques to access. So is Gemini space a "dark web", at least in that latter sense? And, if so, why isn't it (so far as I know) full of terrorists and paedophiles? Just wondering.

Just out of curiosity: Do folks consider Gemini/gopher/scroll/nex/etc part of the "small web" movement? Or completely separate? The objectives seem to be similar, even though the protocols are different. I'm only asking because I'm trying to figure out how best to divide up the pages on my website.

Is hating online advertising weird? I asked my son (25) how he can bear to watch videos on YouTube, when they're interrupted by advertising every few minutes. He looked at me is if I'd just laid on egg. That, apparently, is just how things are -- he didn't find it odd at all. He found _me_ odd for objecting to it. Do you have to be old, like me, to find online advertising objectionable? The popularity of ad-blockers suggests not, but perhaps only the old folks use them? Is viewing the world...

UTF-8 emojis in Gemtext โ I wonder what people's views are on these? I note that some people use UTF-8 emojis in Gemtext, even in headings that might end up in a search or aggregator. Lagrange handles these without any additional config, but some clients don't. Amfora (on my Linux system) doesn't, without additional font configuration. So is it safe to use these? They do add a bit of zing to pages, but making folks install additional fonts seems a bit cheeky. Sorry if this has been discussed...
