That's where Yggdrasil and Nex could be the solution: free, permanent IPv6 instead of reliance on DNS.
That's why I dislike the DNS and certificate requirements for the Gemini protocol as well.

@cthulhu can we support you to keep it up?

@ps I didn't know about those projects yet, nice!
But in defense of Gemini, you don't strictly need a DNS and the certificate can be self-signed. Not sure about other clients but Lagrange just warns about the CN mismatch if accessed via IP. The user can accept that and continue to use the site.

@mono I meant Yggdrasil TLS and Gemini TLS. Since all traffic is already encrypted, the Nex protocol is a better choice, but it does not support headers. What I want is a TLS-less option for the Gemini protocol, in other words.
In my opinion, the current Gemini implementation is quite dependent on centralized web technologies. There are some of those technologies that I don't particularly like, and DNS is one of them.

@mono no, thanks. I'm just a greedy cheapskate. I don't want to pay x*40 just because one year has passed.
Then I'll move to cthulhu29.space! Stay tuned!

The non-commercial internet is slowly dying simply because it was based on commercial technologies. DNS is a scam that takes money from inexperienced users for nothing.
I used to own a lot of domains and trademarks, but now I own none.

@cthulu I see, good to know the capsule will stay in space π

@ps I think I see your point. What I like about Gemini is the integrated user authentication. How would you handle auth in Nex? Via Yggdrasil IP? I'm deeply rooted in the (not so) classic web, maybe my imagination is limited.

@mono, I think these discussions are pointless because no one will make changes to the protocol. To be brief, I just want something like an HTTP/HTTPS option where I can have authorization or a secure connection.
