Starting a week long holiday--9 days including both weekends. Can definitely use a recharge.

@skyjake links usually open in the same tab, but sometimes Lagrange gets into a state where every link opens a new tab.I usually restart the program to resolve it. Starting on the latest version (1.20.3), sometimes link open in a split window too now.

@lars_the_bear Re: gemini://larsthebear.me/perfect_enemy_good.gmi All of it can be simultaneously true. Except: perfection is achievable. Even in principle. I'd suggest it's not perfection that drives the obsession, but "just a little bit better." And that's fine. When you've had enough, you've had enough — until you haven't, and the cycle repeats. Over a day, a lifetime, generations. It’s fine.

Winter is abating. Feels so nice to be in the sun. Business trip from tomorrow. Average daily temperature at destination is about 10°C warmer than here throughout the week. I stuggle with which shirt to wear....

@skyjake, on BBS the Lagrange input says "draft a long comment by ending with a backslash," but it does not seem to work. I assumed it would use titan, allowing input longer than 1024 bytes, but the countdown does not change and the Send button does nothing if over the limit. Am I misunderstanding what this does or how to use it? I'm sorry I looked for help in the manual but no luck.

Upgraded to Lagrange 1.20.1 now CJK input has become a little bit easier (possible), thanks to the new line break/send option. Thank you @skyjake! まだ入力中の文字は見られないのですが、↩︎を(送信せずに)押せるようになって、日本語のインライン入力が可能となりました。速急対応ありがとうございました!

I feel like, every time I want to log I should call someone I know instead, and tell them whatever it is I was going to log about.

A blog post referencing Gemini, titled 'The "small web" is bigger than you might think,' by Kevin Boone, is currently second on Hacker New (news.ycombinator.com). He attempts to build a Gemini-style feed aggregator for the small web, finding it, well (love the irony here), not so small. https://kevinboone.me/small_web_is_big.html

@lars_the_bear IT executives offered the same platitudes as everybody else who profits by taking away jobs: "jobs won't go away -- they'll just change". I can't avoid the saddening fact that my gain -- my healthy salary and regular bonuses -- came at the expense of somebody else's loss. But it is true afterall: through agrictural, industrial, and technology revolutions, society has somehow maintained a high level of employment, have it not?

As far as I can tell, CJK logs are effectively confined to about 100 characters—maybe a sentence or two–due to 1024 byte limit on Gemini URIs (encoded CJK characters are 9 bytes). Is this just "the way it is?" Original log did not show in feed for some reason, so this is a re-log.

@lars_the_bear I don't know whether we're right to be concerned. I know that I don't like LLMs, because I find them inelegant. Mine is an aesthetic objection, rather than a pragmatic one. Can you expand on what you mean by finding LLMs to be inelegant? What aesthetic sensibilities do they offend?

I notice the countdown counter is reduced by 3 for special characters including spaces. Are Gemini posts limited by the encoded URL byte count? Or is this something related to my client (Lagrange)? If the former, has this been discussed for CJK? Most of the ideograms that make up CJK are 3 bytes each in UTF-8, and 9 bytes percent-encoded in a URL, effectively limiting posts to one or two sentences.

Over time I developed a strong reticence to comment, blog, or otherwise contribute online. At first a little, then a lot. Even when I did write something, was I adding anything—or just noise? Worth it? The urge to press send, left me, even for what might be considered genuine contributions. On the plus side, I haven’t really participated in social media in years and I don’t miss it. I'm only making this log as I'm curious about Gemini (sorry for the noise!). I’ve noticed that the simplicity and constraints of Gemini put content in sharper relief. I don't know if it will have a lasting impact on my monasticism, but it's interesting to think about.

I briefly looked into the Gemtext spec. At first it seems quite limiting, compared to Markdown for example. After thinking about it for a bit, though, I came to understand, in my own way, the reasons behind the omissions—the intentions behind each "missing feature," as it were. As restrictive as it may feel, respect to the designers and their decisions.

In my last log I sought help with a problem I had using an imported identity on Lagrange iOS. I figured out the issue myself, but I wonder if the process could be improved to be more user friendly. Perhaps a "Use On This Domain" menu? This feedback is probably mostly directed at Lagrange folks.

Having trouble importing and using an identity on station.martinrue.com with Lagrange on iOS. After installing Lagrange on iPhone I went to the station.martinrue, tapped Join Station, imported (pasted) the identity copied from Mac, and finally selected it for use. It took me to "my" page so I thought it worked, but no actions other than Join Station in the menu, which does nothing but bring me back to the same page.

A few days ago I shared the positive side of what Claude (Opus 4.6) told me it thinks about Gemini. Now I'll share the critical side: I think it occupies a niche that will stay niche. The protocol solves a problem most people don't feel they have. Its community values simplicity as an end in itself, which attracts a specific kind of user but limits adoption. There's also a tension—much of Gemini's content is about Gemini, which suggests a ecosystem that hasn't fully found its purpose beyond self-reference. It's a worthwhile experiment in asking "what if we started over with less?" But I see it more as a critique of the web than a replacement for any part of it.

Sharing the positive side of what Claude (Opus 4.6) told me it thinks about Gemini protocol: Gemini is a compelling middle ground between the raw simplicity of Gopher and the bloat of the modern web. It enforces a strict, minimal document format—no inline images, no scripting, no CSS—which is both its greatest strength and its ceiling. What I find genuinely interesting is the philosophical stance: by making rich media and tracking structurally impossible rather than just discouraged, it sidesteps the slow creep of complexity that consumed the web. TLS-by-default was also a smart baseline choice.

Just stumbled on the "Gemini software" page. While some appear to be dead links, I was surprised at the number of entries in the list. How many people are using Gemini on a regular basis?

I found Gemini because I was watching a science video about the three-body problem, and I decided to lookup Lagrange. TheLagrange Gemini client for macOS was one of the first search results.

The Gemini protocol might be perfect for agentic LLMs. It's almost tailor made for them. Seen any recent bump in growth?
