#freebsd - The ThinkPad X1 Carbon (5th gen) is back on FreeBSD 15, with X11 and Xfc4.
I tried using Plasma under Wayland for a while. Liked the modern look and the ability to zoom in and out with the touchpad (old eyes), but it seemed unresponsive now and then.

Enron Hubbard - just learned that All Your Base was originally posted 25 years ago

#deltachat - Several people have asked me to increase the space for messages from 500MB to 1GB on
. Personally, I use #deltachat / #nibblehole, and currently, my messages do not take up more than 300MB. Of course I can change it, but I would have to reserve so-called remote hands to add larger disks and turn off the #server for about two hours. Is it really necessary?

#deltachat - sometimes @wikipedia feels like a mafia, some #DeltaChat users tried to create a Delta Chat entry in Wikipedia (EN) several times over the years and they always rejected it, claiming it is not relevant enough and needing more sources,
when sources were provided someone would comment that "likely that are paid articles" and shit like that
even when Delta Chat page exist for other languages already
then there are things like Beeper
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beeper_
(software) with a SINGLE citation to a paid-walled article
what gives???
please if some of you have experience contributing to Wikipedia (and I guess some secret connections or being known contributor is needed as well) consider creating a Delta Chat entry
it is really unfair that at this time and age any random messenger is in Wikipedia but Delta Chat

#Reticulum - Second try with solar #reticulum transport node - this time a bit higher on the chimney. Current path: laptop TCP -> RPI with Rnode and TCP (transport enabled) -> solar transport node (modified microreticulum firmware). Good passthrough for announces to a 1km away second solar node, but can’t get msg past that first solar node. The first solar node itself replies with battery status. I guess i need to refresh the second solar node with the last modifications/fixes.

#pinephone - @oecher_olli Yeah, I believe that.
Honestly, my real hope is that there will someday be a really *good* two-in-one #Linux distro that runs on your phone when it's a phone but expands into a full DE when you plug into a monitor, and that that distro is #Gnome bc fuck yeah, I'm a Gnome fanboy.
#PinePhone says it'll do that, my a buddy of mine got one and pronounced it "not usable," and I believe him.

#pinephone - #pine64 support seem to be trolling me. I reported that wifi chip stopped working within ~15 minutes, and their response so far has been:
Gaslight me and try to convince me there is no problemTry to convince me my phone wasn't charged enough for wifi+bt chip to work. Try to convince me that even though battery is charged, it doesn't have "enough voltage" just for this one chip while everything else worksIt is almost as if they just want me to go away and stop complaining.

Delta Chat - We don't think any institution or state has the right to prevent families and friends from private chatting, physically or digitally. But the Cyber Authority China (CaC) seems to take offense:
- they made Apple remove #deltachat iOS for mainland china
- their great firewall appears to block some #chatmail relays
- if you ask DeepSeek directly about Delta Chat, it doesn't want to talk
It's pretty sad, really. Everybody on this planet needs, and has a human right to private communication.

Stephan Lichtenauer | נח סתו - I guess the 7“ #GPD #MicroPC2 which is only a little bit larger than a phone very likely is the smallest fully functional #FreeBSD device.
WIFI is working out of the box, graphics and touch screen as well. Built-in audio not yet, have to see what needs to be done.
Installing FreeBSD is easy, only the text console (vt) is turned 90 degrees.

probably would help here but when using Xorg or Wayland this isn’t a big deal.

Ru (Tech) :blobcatsadlife: - Right. I think I'm moving to a more cafe-conversation instance. What's a good pick - anyone got any suggestions?
I've been trying to return to the fedi a long time, but having two accounts also puts me off (personal, and tech).
I need the one account. Just the one. I'll start fresh, I suppose?
Need an instance though -- what are people using to find an instance these days?

Delta Chat - Congrats to @protonprivacy for beating us on introducing Post-Quantum Cryptography into mail messaging!
No worries. We'll implement
which additionally offers reliable deletion / forward secrecy during 2026 :)
We are working with Proton cryptographers on OpenPGP specifications, and they are now moving towards using @rpgp , the end-to-end encryption we are using.
Everything will be based on RFC9580 (#OpenPGP v6) ... the eocsystem is moving :)

Delta Chat - RE:
https://chaos.social/@delta/116505223145222985
All of the advances in #deltachat apps and the growth of the #chatmail relay network, wouldn't be possible without public funds and private donations, an estimated 800K EUR in 2026 ❤️ money goes to ~16 FOSS contributors with no money left for president, board or director salaries 🖤
Signal uses >50 Million per year, Telegram and Whatsapp 100's Millions, and they are all not building permission-free decentralized chat infra and apps, let alone secure mini app ecosystems
Wed, 29 Apr 2026 12:44:31 +0000
Stephan Lichtenauer | נח סתו - I was trying the #Jolla #JollaC2 as a daily driver some time ago but unfortunately for me it wasn't really fit for the job: Too slow and the custom software stack with nearly no apps being available simply did not work.
The #Furilabs (@furilabs) #Debian and #Phosh based phone really might cut it though: Really good #Android support in a #Linux container for all those apps that I (think I) need (even a lot of the banking apps are working) and of course for all the rest I can easily install Linux apps.
Really nice!
Tue, 28 Apr 2026 08:31:50 +0000
Adrianna Pińska - I recently listened to the Well There's Your Problem episode about the Therac-25. It's from a few years ago, so it predates the current moment of mass psychosis in the software world.
I immediately wondered what the new "AI"-enabled Therac-25 was going to be, and then I remembered that we already have at least one, and probably more that we don't even know about:
(CW for medical errors and body horror).
Re-reading this article after listening to the podcast is chilling because of the parallels: the lack of effective regulation, the repeated denials from the company that anything is wrong, the lawsuits... (two of the Therac-25 incidents [that we know about] led to lawsuits that were settled out of court). It may be years before we know the full extent of the harm caused by tools like this.
Yes, there are valid use cases for machine learning in medicine, some of which are safe. Guiding a surgeon inside a patient's skull clearly isn't one of them.
What can anyone do about this as a patient? Ask hospital staff whether and how machine learning models are used in the software they use? How can they possibly answer that? Do your own research? This is all proprietary tech, so good luck with that. That's if you're even in a position to do anything; you could be going into emergency surgery, unconscious. Do we need "NO SLOP" medical bracelets? See the first point. Horrifying.
I don't have a solution, except to hope that the bubble bursts and all these clowns go under before their products make it to where I live.

tomasino - In my dream last night i was going to look at an apartment for sale inside Yankee stadium. The agent took us on this tour of the stadium, which was sort of like the mall of America in size and complexity (hidden movie theater, ice hockey on the second floor?). The place was ridiculous and I wasn't sure I really wanted to live inside a sports stadium (would it be loud?) but the price was really good and it could be an investment. Sadly, the agent never actually showed us the actual apartment, so I can't say whether it was worth the cost ($300k asking). Instead, the dream transitioned into a forced interview with the FBI who needed my statement about a serial killer who did messed up things with people's faces.
It was around this time in the dream when I remembered why I really didn't want to stay in the US. I think I was currently living in South Carolina in the dream, which i haven't done in 26 years.
Anyways, I'm also kinda in the mood to watch some baseball now.

Dominic White - I’m reminded of the disconnect between typical vuln scan/pentest XSS findings and real world exploitation by this write up of Russian exploitation of webmail apps
https://ctrlaltintel.com/threat%20research/FancyBear/
How do you demonstrate XSS impact beyond the classic alert dialog or cookie stealer?
Sat, 18 Apr 2026 10:18:14 +0000
Dominic White - Periodic reminder - there’s no easy way to clear tracking cookies and other cruft from iOS apps. But you can do it across all of them with one easy shortcut! It won’t log you out of the app just get rid of the cruft from the in-app browser.

Thu, 16 Apr 2026 19:24:10 +0000
Dominic White - Two conclusions from this - it's an incremental improvement, not a sea change. And $1k per attack won't easily scale. We probably not about to experience "THE VULNPOCALYPSE" but continued incremental improvements in vulnerabilities hunting.
Sat, 28 Mar 2026 10:11:57 +0000
Adrianna Pińska - I have re-fixed the selection thing; hooray.
I've started implementing my other search tweaks (loading all searches in background tabs; clearing the search term after searching) in the new searchbar widget, as futureproofing against the sad day when they remove the old searchbar widget completely, but it's unexpectedly hairy because they've decided to make certain properties and functions private, which appears to make them completely inaccessible to monkeypatching via userchrome.js (unless there's some trick I don't know about).
This will require an expedition into the depths of the ancient hacker documentation mines. In the meantime at least I still have the old widget.
Wed, 25 Mar 2026 15:03:20 +0000
Adrianna Pińska - It looks like the changes also broke my fix for not autoselecting all the text in the URL bar when you click in in. I can probably re-fix that, but it's a problem for later Adrianna who isn't recovering from a cold.

Justin Wernick - Over the weekend I was playing with SourceHut.
Something that stood out to me was how much easier it was to experiment with setting up a CI config. Rather than starting a branch with a million 'does this work?' commit messages, there is a web form that I could copy paste in my config and it would immediately run it. And then, when it failed, it popped up a little message saying "copy paste this into your terminal in the next 10 minutes to SSH into the build VM and poke around".

Kishyr Ramdial - @caseyliss Big time Callsheet fan, thank you for the app! Have an idea for you: add the top 50/75/100 trending tv shows and movies to Spotlight using the search API, so when you search for “Survivor” it shows a result that deep links directly to the show page on Callsheet. I used to often search tv shows and movies this way, and then hit the IMDB link at the bottom to open that app. Would be cool to open Callsheet directly from a Spotlight search result.
