Binaural editor/player recommendation? I tried java version of Gnaural, the editor works fine. I can export wav file for play back. But I think the project is long dead and the audio stack of OpenBSD has changed too much that the in-app play back no longer work (OpenBSD's java port is stucked at version 17). Binaural audio is normally played as a background noise so.. a five hour long wav file weights a few gig therefore in-app play back in highly desired.

goodbye sfm, hello vifm — I’ve been a long time user of the sfm. sfm is an extremely lightweight, vi key binding inspired, text mode file manager that is configured by editing its config.h file. The binary is only 60kb, it is really the best file manager for my software minimum fetishism. Sfm has not been the most stable program, there is always a random crash here and there. Since the latest OpenBSD patch, I keep getting pledge error. So I went on a search for a possible replacement. From...

Folding bicycles Anyone here rides a folding bicycle? There are quite a few options out there. In terms of ride quality should I choose 16 inch wheel? 18 inch? 20 inch?? lighter weight is a plus but not a must, my current bike (very old one made of steel) weights over 18kg so anything would be an upgrade. I do prefer smaller folded size, makes it easy to make use of public transport. The folding bits do make me a bit nervous, hinge are often the structural weak point. I’m close to ruling out...

chawan v0.3 and error message — So I’ve been running chawan v0.2.2 for a while now, good little browser. Since version v0.3 chawan got hint support, that’s right, just like vimperator used to. so today, I compiled the latest nim (2.2.6) and chawan (g73577b5d). with: make TARGET=release j=4 the browser builds and functions ok, but during run time it gives out tons of error message about ‘please move xxxfunction to your own namespace to avoid name clashes’. So I tried to rollback to the v0.3...

pandoc and website preservation — Back when I used firefox/chromium. I use their print function to save full web page to a pdf file. For example, Paul V Bolotoff wrote articles on the history of DEC alpha CPUs, but his website is long gone, the only copy of the article I could find is on the archive section of someone’s personal site. But I found out I could use pandoc accomplish this task: pandoc [http link] -o oldarticle.epub I find the epub family of formats better suit my needs. PDF is...

Music programming — Hello BBS *tips fedora. So I came across this software package called “Strudel” that lets you write an algorithm to produce music. The melody will react live as you make modification to your code. Amazing! However, the entire software is written in JavaScript and runs best in Chrome, which is not exactly halal for someone like me to use. I think the idea of algorithmic music generation is not new at all, is there some software package that are more minimal and local (...

The Anubis surge — Long time readers on this BBS would know I don't really do javascript. Dillo has served me well for most of my document reading needs on the web. However! In this past month I've been hit by a surge of bot detection pages on previously accessible websites! stackoverflow, the arch wiki just to name a few. So my fellow javascript haters: What is your experience in recent month?

The Chawan http browser — Check out the Chawan http browser on sr.ht! It is a terminal browser that supports CSS! sites look much better than what you will get from say lynx. I think it is an ideal http viewer for offpunk and other command line gemini browsers. Chawan is written in nim and builds ok on OpenBSD, I need to install gmake and compile nim 2.2 out of nim 1.6 from package.

OpenIndiana — So I tried OpenIndiana's live image. I digged out two of my older system for this task, since their HCL indicates no support for anything newer than Intel 8th gen. On my 8th gen intel system, the OS failed to initialise the PCIE root hub, result in a no-boot. On my 6th gen system, I reached GUI login screen with the correct resolution, but when I tried to login, X11 would crash. So I tried to boot to console, but didn't reach login prompt. So you see, running a big ZFS pool...

Game review: Nebulous: fleet command — The richness of the game mechanics is unbelievable! Here are some examples. When launching a fleet wide missile strike, you can edit the launch sequence to first launch a dedicated E-war missile to mask the signature of damage dealing missiles behind it! As for warhead selection, you can pick armor piercing, high explosive. When it comes to HE warhead, you can pick impact or delay fuse! Impact fuse equipped warhead will mainly damage modules that are...

RK3399 SBC as OpenBSD Desktop? So I’ve read the excellent article from exotic silicon dot com, the instructions they give seems easy enough to follow. Anyone tried any of the RK3399 boards with OpenBSD? Building your own BL31 (this is the dreaded ARM trusted firmware) from source is damn interesting, I bet they will never ever let you do that for snapdragon or Apple Mx. Anyone tried Tow-Boot on one of these boards? How about root on nvme drive? I guess for a desktop, all I “really” need is...

I had this dream the other night where, in the next world war, trillions of microplastic beads infused with dioxin are dropped by a fleet of large aircrafts. I woke up absolutely terrified.

I assembled a wrist watch. I try not to touch my cell phone as much as I could, the none stop bombardment of notifications for the latest ‘breaking news’, ‘shocking’ thirty second videos that are designed to elicit the strongest possible emotional response. Back when everyone worn a wrist watch, 38mm diameter seems to be the standard for man’s. For whatever reason new watches have grown to a size that defies reason. I guess wrist watch have became a fashion accessory that are designed to be...
