New post on undeadly.org: [https link] sysctl hw.smt is getting replaced with sysctl hw.blockcpu which allows blocking whole classes of core from the scheduler. Seems like a great improvement and assuming you can switch at runtime a good way to extend laptop battery life.

Has anyone ever gotten a proper OpenBSD handheld cyberdeck to work? I'm looking at ditching conventional smart phones for a feature phone+cyberdeck combo. Linux has more of an advantage for this type of application but I'm stubborn and want something that I can't have. Anyone have ideas?

Anyone ever use OpenBSD with a desktop environment as a daily driver? How was it? Can you do most stuff on it? It sounds like a potentially fun project.

Hey everyone. I'm looking for a cheap used laptop that's "perfectly" supported by OpenBSD. I only plan to use it to write my short stories with, so my requirements aren't high at all, but I would like as good of battery life as I can get. Does anyone have any suggestions? I know Thinkpads are the standard advice, but I think an X1 Carbon or whatever is still overkill for this, so a specific, older recommendation that can still run the newest version would be great.

It looks like the OpenBSD web infrastructure is messed up as of 20251022. The /pub/OpenBSD directory is inaccessible on openbsd.org and www.openbsd.org. [http link] [http link] is inaccessible Thankfully the cdn mirrors are still (apparently) ok. /etc/installurl can be patched to use them. [http link] [http link] is still accessible. Has anyone else noticed this?

Practical security for supply chain attacks? β I'm considering running OpenBSD on my laptop, but I'm concerned about supply chain attacksβboth in transitive dependencies of packages added via pkg_add, and in dependencies of software I'm actively developing and building. On something like Fedora, I have Flatpak + Flatseal for GUI apps like Firefox and GIMP, and I have good VM options for command-line applications and for building software. On OpenBSD, however, all I really have are chroot, pf...

Has anyone got Micro working? β I have recently reinstalled OpenBSD, only to find that my editor of choice (micro) is not available via pkg_add and that the program itself fails when installed from ports, source, or from the tarball. The error message is the following: [preformatted] Now, there is an issue open about this on GitHub. Apparently, the bug is due to syscall(2) being removed in OpenBSD 7.5, which was released just over a year ago. Since mle is failing to build without libc and I don'...

OpenBSD/GabeDeck part II β Carrying on from my previous post, I tested OpenBSD on the steamdeck. Preliminary result: Mostly good! Test conditions: OS: FuguIta 7.6 with the latest patch as of today HW: Steamdeck OLED PCB version 5, type-c hub, 64G USB drive, keyboard and mice. Result: OpenBSD boots normally. From OSβs perspective the hardware is unremarkable. The only funny hardware is 28de:1205, the build in Valve controller. The hardware is otherwise a normal APU based microPC. At Idle...

OpenBSD on Steamdeck? I acquired a steamdeck mainly to play older games. The power consumption is pretty good, CPU/GPU draw ~3 to 4W when playing fallout NV. The firmware offers some interesting features too. I successfully undervolted the CPU by -50mV and GPU by -30mV. The stock steamOS offers a desktop mode, where the console would switch to KDE. When docked to an external monitor and keyboard, the console is somewhat serviceable for desktop stuff. Anyone tried booting OpenBSD on the deck?...

Multicore performance -- I've recently come back to OpenBSD on a laptop, running it on a Panasonic Toughbook. I've noticed something that I'm not sure used to be this way a few years back (around 6.4 or so?): When multiple processes try to run kernel locked syscalls, they spend _a lot_ of CPU time spinning on the kernel lock, quickly burning through the battery. I'm pretty sure it didn't use to be that way 5 years ago. Did something change? Or am I misremembering?

PATH and dotfiles question β Something keeps overwriting my PATH in .profile; or itβs simply not set. Cannot tell which. Any pointers? Relevant snippets: [preformatted]

Have tried OpenBsd a few times and liked it, but what holds me back is lack of support for liba/vaapi etc. I find myself wondering why this is a hurdle for OpenBsd as all of the other BSD family have it implemented without issue? Maybe someone could throw some light onto what makes it an obstacle?

Hello from Lagrange on OpenBSD 7.5! β I feel like I've arrived! This is starting to feel very cozy. Once I managed to replace the WiFi card (as per my previous post here) it went SO much more quickly; but there's a lot of learning involved for me. I've only used Linux (and MacOS) before, and I've always just mostly went along with whatever the Distro gave me. Now I feel like I am building a system. I had to do it all, and with some community help I'm really glad to have been able to get...

Finally the new Broadcom WiFi card arrived for my old Macbook Air, so I can give OpenBSD a proper go! I am so excited about it. Installed the new card, flashed install75.img, off I go, wish me luck!

How sucky is OpenBSD installation for the first time? I managed to boot up my old laptop (An 1.8ghz Acer from 2008-ish?), and I thought Iβd give OpenBSD a crack on it. What do I need to be looking out for, coming from a MacOS / Linux background?

living with arcticfox browser on OpenBSD β I have been using arcticfox for few years now, it gives me a good old software vibe. My old computer is an intel Skylake. The browser builds and runs ok abeit a bit slow. I think this is because, on OpenBSD building arcticfox with -O2 will produce crashing binary (-O1 is ok, even the README says to only use -O0). I recently got a new Alderlake based system, arcticfox builds ok with my .mozconfig. However when I try to run it, the binary crashs with...
