YouTube locked down on Android? — It may be me, but two Android devices I own, as of today, do not let me watch videos via GrayJay or via HTTP using waterfox. I get a request to log in (to avoid bots in one message, and 'to support our community' in another). I thought it was a global lockdown, but oddly, on a Linux box with waterfox I have no problems. Anyone experiencing this?

FBI buys location data — The first response is a perfect summary. consumer apps embed ad SDKs → those SDKs feed location signals into RTB ad exchanges → surveillance-oriented firms sit in the RTB pipeline and harvest bid request data even without winning auctions → that data flows to aggregators who don't have any direct relationship with consumers → and from there it's sold to government agencies, among others. The genius of this structure is that accountability dissolves at every layer. Each...

Hi all, I released MicroCrypt for Android and PC on GitHub and I would like you, in case you have a Gmail account too, to invite you for beta-testing the Android app for a later Play Store release. If you are interrested in helping me, simply write me an email to sacenator[AT]gmail[DOT]com, so that I can add you to the beta-tester team. [https link]

I've used Tor some for a while now. I know you shouldn't login and all of that, but I do have a question. If the website/service allows it, and one were to make his account inside the Tor network and never login outside of the Tor network or under a VPN (I suppose logging in under a VPN after Tor brings up a different question), would that provide some pseudoanonymity as long as you don't specifically provide any identifying information to the account, or reveal it through posts, especially if...

Approaching dystopia. How did we get here? — I miss the days where people didn’t self-censor on the internet out of fear they were being watched, where anonymity (even if only perceived) was sacrosanct. I miss public forums where most people followed the golden rule, but bad people could still be bad because platforms only banned content that actually broke the law. It was the public square. Today I see ads everywhere. Bloat everywhere. Proprietary software (often spyware) everywhere. This...

I found an interesting article (in Russian) about why DuckDuckGo sucks: [gemini link] Держитесь подальше от DuckDuckGo - Personally, I'm not surprised. I'm still using DuckDuckGo for web searches and AI assistance, but I recently installed a local LLM with the intention of giving a small middle finger to the naivety: [gemini link] Перший досвід з Ollama / LLM

After a long pause, I installed the Monero wallet and am wondering how user-friendly its GUI is. It seems to have everything out of the box: Light wallet mode Blockchain pruning (its blockchain isn't too large as of today) Even CPU mining (RandomX) All this time, I thought it was a currency for hackers, but now I've changed my mind: this currency is for humans in 2025! I'm starting to receive donations with it as my primary wallet. I would also like to use it for transactions, as its rate...

Session Messenger: what do you think? [https link] As far as I know, it uses a semi-Tor network, but I have never reviewed its code or implementation. I am considering trying it with the Yggdrasil network to further wrap and mask my traffic.

Hi all, I have released Tor Traffic Toolkit, so that you get a better picture how your encrypted Tor packets travel in the Tor Network. Hope you like! Tested under Windows 11. I would appreciate if you can tell me if it works properly under Linux/macOS. [https link]

Encrypted, Anonymous, could text the entire nation in 12 minutes. — I just saw a newsclip about the Secret Service taking down an apartment full of servers and telecom gear near the UN bulding, apparently designed to target cell phones of public officials. I don't know what that was, but it looked like a high-end amateur server room for a game, maybe. The punchline: Secret Service spokesman (maybe even the head, I don't know), said, nodding meaningfully: "Encrypted, anonymous... It could text...

It’s worrying to see that this is Mozilla’s stance on privacy and advertising. May it somehow be connected with the current US trade and human rights policies? [https link] Jan Penfrat’s comments from the Mozilla event

Telemetry — There was a time when telemetry, that is on by default, would have been called spyware. Now it’s business as usual and you are a luddite if you don’t like it. Even many FOSS projects seem to be fine with it. I wonder how that happened.

I just entered my keychain password instead of VPN account one. If this action potentially sent my password to the VPN logs, then they now know my IP address and credentials and able to connect me with SSH. I'm worried about connecting, and I don't want to change my credentials because of that. How many people have done the same and do not have their firewall configured properly.

I found an interesting idea to use IPFS with Gemini, similar to what the Agregore browser provides. However, there’s one problem: torrents are not about privacy. With this feature, everyone will know which hosts I visited. It may even be less safe than regular web surfing these days.

Just imagine: today, a third-party individual remotely controls your client through the default JavaScript policy. Ajax loading, remote images with cookie tech were quite appealing back then.

PeerTube is a cool project, but there is an issue: it exposes peer IP addresses to everyone. One of the most concerning trends in the modern world is the prevalence of IPv6, which has the potential to serve as an ID for everyone and every device. In comparison to the future that seems to be approaching, shared IPv4 over NAT would be a good old friend.

Mozilla removes the 'do not track' setting — Citing that "many websites ignore this feature" Mozilla removed it. Many drivers ignore stop lights! Lets remove them too. At least you could see that I did not want to be tracked... Alrhough that probably made me more interesting. [https link] In all likelihood this makes no difference except it does show that we're going in the wrong direction...
