Symbol Or Emoji? — The following line should alternate between the biohazard symbol and the biohazard emoji. ☣☣️☣☣️☣☣️☣☣️☣☣️☣☣️☣☣️☣☣️☣☣️☣☣️☣☣️☣☣️☣☣️☣☣️☣☣️ What do you see? Thanks to @SavaRocks ascii chess board and some prompting from @sy, I managed to get Alhena to honor the symbol variation selector. If you build from the latest source, you can see what I mean. Other Gemini clients on my system display only the symbol or only the emoji. Amfora starts out with the symbol but switches to the…

Alhena 5.5.7 — Changes Alhena 5.5.7 is out. This release has a lot of small fixes and enhancements. The biggest noticeable change is that subscriptions and feeds are now part of the database restore/merge functionality. There was a bug with a database connection being left open. The end result was rare but exhausting the pool would freeze the app. It's the closest thing to a crash I remember in ages. Now it's fixed. I moved the MacOS, Windows and Linux installs from Oracle to Eclipse…

Alhena 5.5.6 — Alhena 5.5.6 is available. The big feature is Gemlog and atom subscriptions. I also added Markdown support. Beyond that, a number of corner case bugs have been squashed. Well worth updating. The Markdown stuff is interesting. There's a library called commonmark which can convert Markdown to HTML. Alhena can take that converted Markdown and run it through its HTML to Gemtext converter. Not everything translates but those things (bold and italics, etc) are quietly ignored. It…

Gemlog And Atom Subscriptions! — If you build from source - sourcerers for those who practice Bad Pun Monday - Alhena now supports subscriptions from gemlogs, changed headers and/or atom.xml. A few notes... When subscribing, Alhena will look for YYYY-MM-DD gemlog links. If detected, those become feed entries. If no gemlog links are detected, Alhena will instead use document headings. Feed URLs are deduplicated just in time for multiple Antenna instances. Feeds can be refreshed manually and…

Alhena 5.5.5 — 🐇🎩 Enhancements include Split View, Restore Tab, an Outline button and the ability to use the "G" key to open right-click link shortcuts (use "F" for left-click). There's also a dialog to configure the "Hot Button" to show either top twenty bookmarks or the user's bookmark folder of choice. Split View can be applied to any tab or standalone page. The individual views can be horizontal or vertical and are resizable via a draggable divider. Links can be opened "Split Right" or "…

Split View and Outline Button — If you build Alhena from source and you'd like to help test, I just checked in extensive changes for Split View functionality. It's more like Chrome's Split View than Lagrange. There's a divider that can be dragged to resize the horizontal or vertical views. Tabs can contain split views and different tabs can contain views with different orientations. The address/toolbar is shared with the selected document like Chrome. Right-click a link to "Open Right" or "Open...

Alhena 5.5.4 — Version 5.5.4 is out. The two notable enhancements: An option to restore tab and window state at launch Tapping the F key displays link shortcuts Saving tab state creates a json file for each open window on exit. These files can be found in the .alhena directory. There's an alhena:pagecache command to control how large these files can get. Oldest pages are discarded first if cache size is exceeded. The F key is like holding down shift-control except you don't have to continue...

Alhena 5.5.3 — Alhena 5.5.3 might be the Haiku release although it does bring gophers:// and other fixes. The native file chooser option might be worth the upgrade if you like the added selection capabilities. Support for gophers:// (Gopher over TLS) Option to use native file choosers on Linux GTK, Windows and MacOS Use Desktop API to define "windowless" menu instead of hidden window on MacOS Only open one external media player at a time (when not using inline media) Ctrl+U added as alternate...

Alhena 5.5.2 — Alhena 5.5.2 is out. Pressing tab in search drop-down copies url to address bar without submitting Improvements to smooth scrolling behavior New Bookmark shortcut changed to ctrl-m/cmd-m to avoid conflict with link shortcuts Drag and drop wasn't working for opus files Include forward slash in Gopher type 7 request for strict servers HTML to GemText improvements for relative links and local files

Alhena 5.5.1 — A couple days back 5.5.1 was released with some interesting changes. Alhena now re-opens at its last position and size even in a multi-monitor environment. Behavior may be different on different platforms. MacOS will open a new virtual desktop if that's where Alhena was last used. Windows and Ubuntu open at the correct location and size but on the current screen when using virtual desktops. Testing was limited to my environment so let me know if you find any oddities. Close...

A Treatise On Monochrome Emojis — Here and elsewhere I've read monochrome emojis are the absolute bees knees and the only way to view Gemini pages while maintaining one's smol integrity. I've seen this enough that I'd like to put out a public service reminder that Alhena supports not only four different color emoji sets but also monochrome emojis via the Noto Emoji font. On MacOS, you can even choose between Noto and the system's color font for a total of six emoji options. The nice thing...

Alhena 5.5.0 Released — Alhena 5.5.0 is out with support for Gemini proxies and some cool printing enhancements. It's now possible to print color backgrounds (including gradients) as well as inline images. Attached is a Astrobotony page generated by printing to PDF. The colors and fonts are defined by my custom style for that site. One word: Papyrus.

Alhena 4.5.7 — Alhena 4.5.7 is out. New features including true streaming on all protocols and five optional audio visualizations. You can turn off streaming (and gain seek) if you're philosophically opposed for whatever reason. That said, it's a better experience and the only way to listen to Gemini and/or HTTP "radio" stations. GitHub now has a link to the native compiled version for Linux users. I wasn't sure if it I'd continue with it since the build process requires a thorough run through...

Alhena 5.4.6 (and Native Linux Version) — Alhena 5.4.6 is out with lots of small fixes and one requested enhancement. I also wrote a blog post about a native version of Alhena for Linux - no JVM required. [gemini link] Alhena [gemini link] Native Alhena

A Smattering — Obligatory announcement for Alhena 5.4.5. The latest release is a smattering of bug fixes and minor enhancements. These were all pushed days ago and nothing has cropped up since. Maybe it's done? [gemini link] Alhena Bug reports and feature requests welcome.

Alhena 5.4.3 With Gopher And More — The headline feature is, you guessed it, native Gopher support. Most common selector types are supported and handled like you'd expect in Alhena (inline images, embedded media, etc). The 'h' selector - basically HTML served over Gopher - renders in Alhena's built-in HTML to Gemtext converter if "Convert Web Pages" is turned on. I added the same feature to Gemini. If the mimetype returned by a Gemini server is text/html, the document is converted and...

Hi, does Alhena currently support HTTP or SOCKS proxy? I'm trying to connect an I2P capsule that requires the i2pd proxy on 127.0.0.1:4444 I need this information to include in my article about available clients with proxy option support: [gemini link] Публікація капсули Gemini в I2P на прикладі сервера Agate [gemini link] Related subject on BBS

5.3.9: Style Manager and New Emojis — 5.3.9 is out. Big changes include a Style Manager so you can see and edit all your page styles in one place. Google, Apple and Twitter sprite emojis have been updated (Facebook is lagging). I also updated the Noto Emoji font if monochrome is your thing. Notable fix from a GitHub report: Relative links are now resolved when copying. That's one of those "how did I miss that" bugs.
